Mean, Median and Mode Calculator

Find the mean, median and all modes of a numeric dataset with sorted data and calculation steps.

Calculate

Enter up to 1,000 values separated by commas, spaces or newlines. Repeated values count as repeated observations. Do not use thousands separators.

Calculations run in your browser. Numeric inputs are not included in analytics events.

Formula and variables

Mean = Σx/n; median = middle sorted value (or average of the two middle values)

x represents an observation and n is the count. Modes are values tied for the largest frequency; this tool reports no mode if every observation occurs once.

Worked example

For 1, 2, 2, 3, 7: sum = 15 and n = 5, so mean = 3. The middle sorted value is 2, so median = 2. The value 2 occurs twice and every other value once, so mode = 2.

When to use this formula

Compare mean and median when outliers or skew are present. The mean uses every value, while the median depends on order. Mode describes repetition and may not be unique.

Common mistakes

Do not take the middle value before sorting. With an even count, average the two central values. A comma is a separator, so enter 1000 rather than 1,000 for one thousand.

What happens when two values are equally common?

If their shared frequency is the highest and exceeds one, both are reported as modes. No arbitrary tie-break is applied.
